The northern part of the Netherlands offers its inhabitants and its many tourist splendid opportunities for leisure. Friesland is famous for its many beautiful lakes and its traditional sailing boats. Every year in July-August there is a famous and spectacular race between these boats throughout the province, the so called "Skutjessilen" regatta.

If you want to sail yourself, you can hire a yacht allmost everywhere. If you don't know how to sail, you might follow a course on one of the many sailing schools or hire a motor yacht to visit by water the beautiful little historical towns of Friesland.

In June the biggest international theatrefestival of Holland takes place on the isle of Terschelling. The festival is called "Oerol" which is Frisian for "Everywhere". That name describes fairly well the nature of the festival. For nearly a week performances take place litterally everywhere on the isle, most of them especially created for that location.
Theatrefestivals also take place in Drachten, Leeuwarden and Groningen.

During winter you can visit indoor skating races in Heerenveen (Thialf) or Groningen (Kardinge) and you could off course do some skating there yourself.

The football teams of Heerenveen and Groningen belong to the best teams in the Netherlands and they play there home matches in modern stadiums.
