Drachten : a great place to live
With its convenient location, accessibility, surrounding countryside and ready availability of housing, Drachten is one of the most attractive residential cities in the North of the Netherlands. Drachten offers a wide range of residential options, such as magnificent residential areas situated on the water or home/work combinations.

At the start of 2007 the number of inhabitants in the Drachten region was around 55,000, but the area served by Drachten has a population of more than 150,000 people. It can pride itself on all the shopping centres, entertainment and cultural possibilities, education instutionsand sports amenities, as well as clubs, social activities and health care that the area needs. And the university city of Groningen and Leeuwarden with its higher education facilities are only a stone’s throw away.
Smallingerland places a very strong emphasis on ‘culture’ which is evident from facilities such as the De Lawei theatre and the arts centre. The city council has a special interest in the quality of the public space.

A range of events is organised on a regular basis with many outstanding occasions scattered throughout the year. A congenial shopping centre attracts many tourists every year, and with its green environment and abundant water facilities Drachten presents many opportunities for cycling and recreational activities.
Shopping
The shopping area has good access with plenty of parking space.
Across Drachten are several neighbourhood shopping centres. The surrounding villages also have their fair share of local shopkeepers and trades people.
Parallel to motorway A7 runs the Martin Luther King Boulevard, the shopping centre for today's house and home consumer. Noordkade and Zuidkade are continuations of the shopping centre: this is the entertainment centre of Drachten with various discos and café's.
