The city council of Drachten has placed an emphasis in the last few years on the cultural development of the city. Drachten has a big theatre called "De Lawei" with a lot of international productions.
Every year in June there is an international theatre festival called "Simmerdeis" (Frisian for "on a summerday").

The Museum Smallingerland has a permanent exposition of Smallingerland's cultural history and art works of international schools De Stijl and Dada.
