The city council of Drachten has placed an emphasis in the last few years on the cultural development of the city. Drachten has a big theatre called "De Lawei" with a lot of international productions.

The Museum Smallingerland has a permanent exposition of Smallingerland's cultural history and art works of international schools De Stijl and Dada.
Of course there is a well equipped public library where you not only will find books, but also cd's and dvd' s which can be borrowed.
